Develop Soft Skills Using Emotional Intelligence

Soft Skills are the combination of people skills, social skills, communication skills, emotional intelligence, and personality traits that make it easy to get along and work harmoniously with other people.

It is more development of EI / EQ in individual’s personality matters than the development of IQ. Together IQ and EI / EQ are responsible for a successful outcome.

What are soft skills?

“When dealing with people, remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but creatures of emotion.” Dale Carnegie

Soft skills are personal habits and traits (A trait is a particular characteristic, quality, or tendency that someone or something has) that help in necessary interaction with workforce for effective and efficient operations output.

(Such as  communication skills, leadership skills, or time management skills and others)

Soft skills dominate, both at getting job and job execution. These are not easy to test. Their value is gauged  from the output results.

Soft skills list may be as follows -general

Development of soft Skills through Emotional Intelligence

What Is Emotional Intelligence (EI) ? or EQ

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand the needs and feelings of oneself and other people, manage one’s feelings, and respond to others in appropriate ways.

The behaviour aspect is genetically inbuilt in human nature and can be developed for better management practices.

It can be developed through the knowledge of Emotional Intelligence (EI), also known as Emotional quotient (EQ)

It is a necessity to have an  understanding of EI/EQ knowledge application  for better management at the workplace.

EI/EQ helps in the development of individuals, in the development of team and in the development of leadership, which ultimately enhances the organizational  development

Human Resource with less EI/EQ contents in their personality have attributes such as

aggressiveness, demanding, ego problems, bossy, confrontational, easily disturbed, poor listener, impulsive, passive, resistance to change, non-responsiveness, stubborn, hard to please, and believe in perfectionism etcetera.

On the other hand, Human Resources with high EI/EQ contents in their personality are

ambitious, driving, strong, decisive, warm, enthusiastic, sociable, persuasive, patient, stable, practicable, predictable, consistent, and good listener.

Everybody wants to achieve success in his life in his field of activities-it may be at home, in office, in the society etcetera.

Environment, Experience and Education (in complete meaning) provide pushbacks to the achievement of the Success in various fields. The three factors along with IQ (which rarely improves) boost your success and it is true.

But further success can be achieved by EQ / EI (Emotional   Intelligence).

It works beyond education and IQ. Emotional intelligence refers to -How your emotions influence your life at work and home- Unlike IQ, the emotional Intelligence can be improved.

EI/EQ revolves on the following points.

Know your Emotions - SELF Awareness

Manage Your Emotions and motivate yourself - SELF Management

Recognize and understand other People’s emotions - SOCIAL Awareness

Manage other’s emotions - Relationship Management

“Try understanding Emotion Intelligence subject for successful and happy life. Emotional intelligence is the ability to sense, understand, and effectively apply the power and acumen of emotions as a source of human energy, information, connection, and influence. — Robert K. Cooper. Ph.D.

The four major skills of EI / EQ model are given in the table below along with the further description.

The Table above shows the list of personality traits that may be added to the personality of the individual, following the Development of Emotional intelligence.

How to Develop Soft Skills

The Desire, Direction, Dedication and Discipline are required for any activity to seek completion. Those who follow , they become different from others and therefore excel.

The basic action is to go for self-analysis. SWOT is one method for such analysis. The inbuilt personality traits can be analysed as below (for example) and developed further. The developed personality traits will help in enhancing EI contents at workplace to get better output.

IQ and EI / EQ, both are necessary. It is EQ / EI that Matters more. Higher the EQ more shall be success. You need a desire, direction, dedication, and discipline to cultivate EI/EQ. Man is physically ill-equipped, but it has the thinking ability and so different from other species.

Successful people do small things in great way. Every failure   boosts them for their efforts to achieve success. The chicken must struggle itself from coming out of the egg and does not get any support, and if it comes out with others help it is not likely to survive.

Struggle is must for success. IN the last 30 years before Abraham Lincoln became president of United States of America, passed through the phase of nervous breakdown, defeats in eight elections, failure in business twice but ultimately became well known president of United State of America.

If you want maximal productivity and if you want work that gets the best results, you want the people doing that work to be in the optimal brain state for the work. You are a person who can evict them from the zone of optimal performance by slothfully handling your own interactions with them. So, it’s up to you to take responsibility for your impact on their ability to work at their best. — Daniel Goleman

Hard Skills at Workplace

There is workplace for everyone in this world.  Knowledge,

skills, and tools & techniques are used to get output at the

workplace for the jobs taken up. All these three things

along with IQ and EQ makes the operations success full.

The skill part is related with IQ and EQ. IQ (education and

training) is responsible for hard skills and EQ (behavioural

aspects) developed soft skills. The soft skills are not soft,

but these skill plays major role at workplace for getting

           successful operations.

One can take notice of the various professions going on

for work operations at the workplace. (Any place having

  inputs and outputs).

Please refer to Understanding Workplace Operations

The professionals do the job or get the job done.

A professional is a member of a profession or any person who earns their living from a specified professional activity. The term also describes the standards of education and training that prepare members of the profession with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform their specific role within that profession. In addition, most professionals are subject to strict codes of conduct and ethics. PMI provide professional certificate covering these aspects.

The professional and other workforce are further defined as below.

 Professional is

  • Someone who does a job that requires special training, education or skill
  • Someone who is a member of a profession
  • Someone who is paid to participate in an  activity
  • Someone who has a lot of experience or skill in a particular jo or activity

 Amateur---

  •   A person who engages in an activity as a past timer rather than professionally or to gain
  • May have superficial knowledge of a subject or activity
  •  A person who is fond of  admires something

Workman -  A man employed to do manual labour.

Supervisor - A person who supervises a person or an activity. (May be any one from low level to high level)

Manager - A person responsible for controlling or administering an organization or group of staff at different levels.

Hard skills are related to specific technical and non-technical  knowledge  and trainings in different fields. These depends on IQ ( Intelligent Quotient) of the person.

Soft skills are personality traits that varies with education,  experience, environment and depends on IQ and EQ ( Emotional Quotient or Emotional Intelligence EI ) both.

Both types of skills  are  necessary to successfully outputs.

It is (IQ + EQ) together, responsible for success. IQ part is mostly  stationary, whereas EQ part is dynamic and can be developed.

Hard Skills vs soft Skills

Hard skills are outcome of technical / nontechnical education or specific training.

Soft skills are overall behaviour  skills / actions that affects the  outcomes in the workplace.

Steps to develop the soft skills are as below:

  Know yourself
   Manage and Motivate Yourself
  Know others
      Motivate and manage others

There’s been a quantum leap technologically in our age, but unless there’s another quantum leap in human relations, unless we learn to live in a new way towards one another, there will be a catastrophe.” Albert Einstein

What are hard skills?

Hard skills get generated through  technical (based on

techniques, technical and practical involvement) or non-

technical knowledge (not having or requiring specialized or

technical knowledge) or training and is more IQ based.

Hard skills can be tested any time.

The successful operation at the workplace is carried out by both, the hard skills, and the soft skills.

Success = IQ (hard skill) + EQ (Soft skill)

IQ is related to knowledge , education, and trainings, and is not expandable or is slightly expandable. The EQ part can be developed and is responsible for success.

There are number of employees appointed at a particular job. But a few reach the top from the same batch, and it is because of the development of soft skill. As such hard skills and soft skills are responsible for success.

EQ and EI/EQ, both are necessary. It is EQ/EI that Matters more. Higher the EQ more shall be success. You need a desire, direction, dedication and discipline to cultivate EI/EQ. Man is physically ill-equipped, but it has the thinking ability and so different from other species. Successful people do small things in great way.
